B-SENS UNABLE TO OVERCOME QUICK GOALS IN 4-2 LOSS

WILKES-BARRE, PA – The Binghamton Senators were unable to overcome a four-goal deficit and fell to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday night 4-2 in front of 8,003 at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took an early 1-0 lead on a shot from the point that was partially screened. David Warsofsky sent the puck through traffic on net from the left side of the blue line and beat Matt O’Connor just 2:26 into the game with assists from Jarrett Burton and Ryan Haggerty.

Just 2:02 later, Sahir Gill put the Penguins ahead 2-0 from inside the left wing circle. Penguins captain Tom Kostopoulos sent a pass from below the goal line to Gill in the left circle and his shot beat O’Connor on his blocker side for the 2-0 lead on his third of the year. Assists on Gill’s goal were given to Kostopoulos and Kevin Porter. After a media timeout, Binghamton replaced O’Connor with Chris Driedger in net.

Two quick goals in the first two minutes of the second period put the Penguins ahead 4-0. Gill recorded his second of the night and fourth of the year on a rebound in front of Driedger. The shot from the point was stopped by Driedger but Gill sent the loose puck by the blocker at 1:26 with assists from Derrick Pouliot and Kostopoulos.

Dominik Simon made it a four-goal lead 34 seconds later from an odd-man rush as he sent a wrist shot by the blocker of Driedger from the top of the offensive zone circle. Assists on Simon’s seventh of the season came from Jean-Sebastien Dea and Teddy Blueger.

Binghamton responded as Casey Bailey fired in his team-leading 13th goal of the year. Michael Kostka moved to the top of the right wing circle and sent a cross-ice pass to Bailey who ripped a one-timer by goaltender Casey DeSmith at 7:33 with assists to Kostka and Ben Harpur.

Kyle Flanagan then pulled the Senators within a pair of goals with his seventh of the season late in the second period. Flanagan moved in on a two-on-none rush with Francis Perron and let a shot fly from the right circle that slipped under the arm of DeSmith. Flanagan’s goal came with 3:58 left in the middle frame, unassisted. Heading into the third, the B-Sens trailed 4-2 and the shots were even at 23.

Binghamton was unable to pull even in the third period and the Penguins came away with the 4-2 win. Driedger made 22 saves in replacement of O’Connor for the loss and DeSmith stopped 30 for the win.

The B-Sens road trip continues Tuesday and Wednesday night in St John’s for 6:00 p.m. puck drops. Can’t make it to the game? Fans can tune in on U.S. Country 96.9 FM, 680 AM, iHeartRadio’s website and mobile app, and AHL Live.
