B-SENS WEEKLY RELEASE (WEEK 19)

LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators (28-18-5-3, 64 pts.) faced three divisional opponents this past week and defeated the high-scoring Hershey Bears on Friday night to keep pace in the East Division playoff race.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 11 vs. ALBANY (4-2 L): The River Rats jumped out to a quick three-goal lead with two goals coming from defenseman Nick Dodge.  The B-Sens battled back with goals from Marc Cavosie in the middle frame and Denis Hamel in the third period.  Albany put the game out of reach in the final minute with a goal from Pat Dwyer.  Netminder Martin Gerber made 26 saves in the losing effort for Binghamton.  The B-Sens have now dropped three straight games to the surging River Rats.

FRIDAY, FEB. 13 vs. HERSHEY (5-1 W): The B-Sens dominated the East Division leaders, the Hershey Bears, in a 5-1 victory.  The win was the second straight against the Bears after dropping the first three of the season series.  Josh Hennessy buried two markers for Binghamton, one coming on the power play and the other a short-handed tally.  It was Hennessy’s third two-goal game of the season.  Defenseman Mattias Karlsson had two assists on the night to extend his assist streak to five games (0+7).  Zack Smith also had two assists on the night, tying his career high.  The B-Sens penalty kill was a perfect 9/9 on the night.  Netminder Jeff Glass made 30 saves to earn the victory. Glass also stopped the AHL’s leading goal scorer, Alexandre Giroux, on a penalty shot in the second period.

SATURDAY, FEB. 14 vs. PHILADELPHIA (4-1 L): The B-Sens outshot the Phantoms 38-28 on Saturday night, including a 17-5 advantage in the third period.  Philadelphia scored four unanswered goals after Denis Hamel found twine in the first period.  The marker was Hamel’s 16th of the season. Mattias Karlsson assisted to extend his assist streak to six games (0+8).  Peter Regin collected an assist for the second straight game.  Philadelphia center Jonathan Matsumoto buried an unassisted short-handed marker late in the second period to seal the victory for the Phantoms.  The B-Sens are 2-2-2-0 in six games this season against Philadelphia.

THIS WEEK: The B-Sens face the Norfolk Admirals (21-25-2-5, 49 pts.) three times this week.  Binghamton welcomes Norfolk to the Arena on Wednesday night before both teams head to Virginia for games on Friday and Saturday. The Admirals have been a tough opponent for Binghamton through the years.  The B-Sens have gone 14-26-3-3 in 46 games all-time against the Admirals.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 18 vs. NORFOLK (7:05 p.m.): The B-Sens last faced the Admirals in the final home game of the 2007-08 season.  Binghamton was three straight against Norfolk last season and scored 17 goals over the three victories. Highlighting the wins was an 8-5 decision on Dec. 1, 2007 at the Arena. Denis Hamel scored two goals, Josh Hennessy notched one goal and two assists and Matt Carkner and Ilya Zubov each had one goal and one assist.  Former B-Sen Brandon Bochenski leads the Admirals in goals (20) and points (39).

FRIDAY, FEB. 20 & SATURDAY, FEB. 21 @ NORFOLK (7:15 p.m.): Binghamton was 2-2-0-0 in four visits to Norfolk Scope in 2007-08, including a win in its last visit to Virginia on Feb. 9, 2008 with a 3-2 decision.  The B-Sens are 13-9-4-0 in 26 road games this year, good for seventh in the American Hockey League.  With injuries to both goaltenders in Tampa Bay, Norfolk is currently without the services of netminders Mike McKenna and Karri Ramo.  Riku Helenius and Craig Kowalski have taken over between the pipes.
