B-SENS WEEKLY RELEASE (WEEK 21)

LAST WEEK: The Binghamton Senators (32-21-5-3, 72 pts.) swept the Hershey Bears and split a home-and-home series with the Rochester Americans to earn six of eight points this past week.  The B-Sens have a seven-point lead over Philadelphia for the fourth and final playoff spot in the East Division.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 25 vs. HERSHEY (6-5 W): Binghamton battled back from two three-goal deficits to down the Bears.  Hershey opened the game with three goals in 10 minutes, the first coming from Keith Aucoin just 45 seconds into the contest. Following goals by Andrew Gordon and Kyle Wilson, netminder Martin Gerber was replaced by Jeff Glass.  The B-Sens got on the scoreboard with Mattias Karlsson scoring his fifth goal of the season. Alexandre Giroux potted his 40th marker of the year to make it 4-1.  Binghamton answered with two goals in 11 seconds, with Denis Hamel and Josh Hennessy firing the scoring shots and making it a 4-3 game at the end of the first stanza.  Peter Regin tied the game at 4 early in the third period.  The Bears struck back with a marker from Graham Mink.  Zack Smith knotted the game at 5 with his 16th tally, a power-play goal, with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.  Following a scoreless overtime session, the B-Sens scored on three of four shootout attempts to secure the extra point.

FRIDAY, FEB. 27 vs. HERSHEY (5-4 W): The Bears once again jumped out early, this time taking a 2-0 lead off goals from Alexandre Giroux and Kyle Wilson.  Binghamton responded with two power-play markers in just over a minute to make it a 2-2 contest.  Josh Hennessy netted his 19th marker and Denis Hamel followed with his 21st tally.  The Bears grabbed the lead back before the end of the opening period with a second goal from Kyle Wilson.  Peter Regin buried his first goal of the night early in the second period to bring the Senators even with the Bears at 3. Hershey took the lead back off a power-play tally from Graham Mink.  Regin answered with his second goal to tie the game at 4 apiece and force overtime.  Regin capped the hat trick with the overtime game-winner, beating netminder Daren Machesney with a wrist shot. The hat trick was the first of his AHL career and the first of the season for a B-Sens player.  Netminder Jeff Glass made 24 saves to earn his third straight win over Hershey.

SATURDAY, FEB. 28 vs. ROCHESTER (4-3 W): The B-Sens power play converted on three of five attempts to power them to a 4-3 win over the Amerks.  Peter Regin made it three straight games with a goal when he netted Binghamton’s opening goal.  Following a Rochester goal midway through the period, Ilya Zubov buried his first goal in 13 games with just one second remaining before the intermission.  Zubov factored on Binghamton’s third goal, feeding Josh Hennessy who buried a wrist shot to give the B-Sens a 3-1 lead.  The Amerks battled back to tie the game with goals from Andrew Sweetland and Michael Duco.

Zack Smith put the Senators ahead for good with a deflection goal off a Mattias Karlsson shot.
Jeff Glass won his third game of the week with 25 saves. Karlsson (0+3) and Zubov (1+2) both finished the night with three points.

SUNDAY, MAR. 1 @ ROCHESTER (3-2 L): Rochester spoiled the B-Sens bid for a perfect week with a 3-2 victory at Blue Cross Arena on Sunday evening.  Binghamton held an early 2-0 lead but could hold off the Amerks.  Peter Regin made it four straight games with a marker when he beat netminder Tyler Plante with a one-timer from the right circle.  Left-winger Shawn Weller buried his first goal in 16 games when he collected a rebound at the left post and scooped it past Plante to give Binghamton the 2-0 lead.  The Amerks answered 22 seconds later with a snap shot from Michal Repik.  Judd Blackwater snapped a shot from just inside the blue line past netminder Martin Gerber to make it a 2-2 game.  Defenseman Jordan Henry netted the game-winning short-handed goal with just 31 seconds remaining in regulation. Henry skated into the B-Sens zone and took a feed from David Brine.  Henry beat Gerber over the glove hand to give the Amerks a 3-2 win.
