For the second straight game, the fate of the B-Sens was decided by a shootout. After the Pens jumped to a 2-0 lead with goals from Chris Conner and Tim Wallace, the B-Sens fought back to tie the game. With just 39 seconds remaining in the second period, Jim O’Brien scored his third of the year to pull the B-Sens within one, while Kaspars Daugavins scored early in the third to tie the game. Ryan Keller and Martin St. Pierre would each record two assists. Despite stopping 38 of 40 Penguins shots in regulation and overtime, B-Sens net minder Mike Brodeur was only able to stop one of five shooters in the shootout.

PP: Rochester 2 for 7, Binghamton 1 for 9

THIS WEEK…

Wednesday, Feb. 17 vs. Adirondack Phantoms (Philadelphia Flyers)

The B-Sens welcome the Adirondack Phantoms to town for a Wednesday evening match. The teams are even in the 2009-10 season series having each won three games. In the last two meetings between these teams it was the Phantoms who emerged victorious. Jan. 27 the Phantoms left the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena with a 5-3 win, then went on to beat the B-Sens 2-1 just two days later at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Jonathan Matsumoto (one goal, four assists) and Patrick Maroon (three goals, two assists) have each recorded five points against the B-Sens. Josh Hennessy has recorded seven points against the Phantoms so far this season (two goals, five assists). Hennessy’s sister, Jenni, will be performing the national anthem at Wednesday’s match.

Friday, Feb. 19 vs. Worcester Sharks (San Jose Sharks)

The B-Sens host the Atlantic Division leaders Friday night. The Sharks enter the week ranked first in the Atlantic with 70 points (33-16-2-2). The Sharks are winners of seven of their last nine games. Entering this week Worcester boasts a 14-7-0-2 road record and has the league’s best road power play with 20 goals scored on 89 man advantages (22.5%). The B-Sens are looking to halt forward Logan Couture who ranks second overall in the league among rookies in scoring (18 goals, 27 assists for 45 points in 33 games played) and first overall in the league in game winning goals with eight.

Promotions: Friday is I Heart Hockey night presented by United Health Services. UHS will have tables throughout the concourse that evening promoting the UHS Foundation and UHS heart health programs. In addition to I Heart Hockey night the B-Sens will be wearing Team USA hockey jerseys to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey team and the “Miracle on Ice”. The jerseys will be auctioned off post game with proceeds going to Broome Sports Foundation and the UHS Foundation.

Saturday, Feb. 20 @ Syracuse Crunch (Columbus Blue Jackets) - *Mirabito Outdoor Classic*

The time has come! The first ever American Hockey League outdoor game, the “Mirabito Outdoor Classic” will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The B-Sens travel to the New York State Fair Grounds this coming weekend to face a Crunch team who enters the week having won seven of their last 10 games. Syracuse leads all teams in the East Division in penalty minutes with 1159. B-Sens fans are hoping that enforcer Jeremy Yablonski (out four games due to injury) returns to the line-up in time for the game as the Crunch boast enforcers Jon Mirasty (169 PIMs) and Kevin Harvey (152 PIMs). Forward Derek MacKenzie currently leads the Crunch in points (14 goals, 21 assists for 35 points in 37 games) and is tied for first in the AHL with four shorthanded goals.

SENS SNIPPITS

Ryan Keller, once again earns the nod as the B-Sens’ nominee for Reebok/AHL Player of the week. Keller recorded four points in four games last week (two goals, two assists). Keller had a two point night Friday, Feb. 12 as he recorded two assists in the B-Sens’ 3-2 shootout loss to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. In addition to his tally in regulation Wednesday, Feb. 10, Keller’s shootout goal proved to be the game winner as the B-Sens went on to defeat the River Rats 4-3. Keller has notched the game winning goal in all three of Binghamton’s shootout victories so far in the 2009-10 season.

Forward Zack Smith recorded three points in four games this week as he tallied three assists. His second assist Sunday, Feb. 14 set up the game winning goal by defenseman Paul Baier in the 4-2 B-Sens victory over Rochester. Two of the forward’s three assists came on the Senators’ power play.

Kaspars Daugavins departed Sunday morning for Vancouver to join the 2010 Latvian Olympic team. In three games with the B-Sens last week Daugavins recorded two assists (both Wednesday, Feb. 10 versus Albany) and one goal. Daugavins is currently ranked fifth overall on the B-Sens in scoring with 14 goals and 18 assists for 32 points in 48 games played. The B-Sens wish Kaspars the best of luck at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.
