The first Binghamton Senators game of the season is less than three weeks away, and the spirit of positive change that the upcoming season is sparking goes beyond the team itself. Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena has been busy all summer fixing up the place that the B-Sens call home.
For instance, two new player stalls were added to the home locker room.
"We used to have 23, and now we have 25," equipment manager Tom Severance explained. "With more and more players being at this level, we're obviously going to need more stalls, and having 25 now helps a lot, especially because of the lockout."
Another exciting addition comes in the form of a very generous donation from the Binghamton Senators Booster Club. The "Blademaster", the newest glove dryer on the market, is now ready for use in the home locker room.
"We're very appreciative of them," Severance said. "It looks more professional, and it gets really hot!"
The players aren't the only ones experiencing the arena's new perks. Members of the media, off-ice personnel, scouts, and (of course) the B-Sens media staff will all enjoy the expansion of the press box.
"For us, it couldn't come at a better time," said Kate Krenzer, Director of Media Relations. "With the lockout, I'm already hearing from media in Ottawa about coming down, not only for training camp but for games, and I'm sure we'll have more media here in general this season."
In the past, the press box expansion area used to be two rows of seats. Krenzer used to assign those spots to members of the media who didn't need a workspace. However, when the American Hockey League implemented recording players' ice time, off-ice officials needed two extra work spaces, which made matters a little hectic in the press box.
"The expansion definitely helps the media relations and social media side of things because of all the extra space," said Krenzer.
