BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators welcomed the Adirondack Phantoms to town for the traditional Thanksgiving night game. There was plenty to be thankful for as the B-Sens defeated the Phantoms, 5-2.
Mark Parrish (two goals, one assist), Nikita Filatov (one goal, two assists) and Derek Grant (one goal, two assists) each had three point nights, while Mike McKenna stopped 37 of the 39 shots he faced to help the B-Sens to their second straight win.
Grant opened up the scoring at 4:15 of the first period, as he tipped a Filatov rebound up and over Jason Bacashihua.
Tom Sestito evened the score at the 12:06 mark, beating McKenna off a backdoor feed from Shane Harper.
Filatov reclaimed the lead for Binghamton with just 12.6 seconds remaining in the opening period. After failing to bury his own rebound, Grant fed a pass to Filatov who one-timed a shot past Bacashihua to send the B-Sens to the dressing room holding a 2-1 advantage.
Binghamton poured the offense on in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals to take a commanding 5-1 lead.
Andre Petersson wristed a shot in off the blocker arm of Bacashihua just 1:44 into the period. At the three minute mark, Parrish netted his first of two in the game on a power play. The B-Sens captain followed that up with a shorthanded tally, his team-leading eighth goal of the season, scored off a feed from Jim O’Brien’s on a two-on-one break.
Bacashihua was then pulled in favor of Johan Backlund after allowing five goals on 25 shots. Backlund, who saw his first action tonight after sitting out the start of the season due to injury, turned away all 15 shots faced.
Sestito added his second of the night on a Phantoms power play in the final minute of regulation. Former Binghamton Senator Denis Hamel received credit for the secondary assist on the goal.
The B-Sens are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Syracuse to take on the Crunch at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the game live on “Binghamton’s Classic Hits” BIG 107.5 (WBBI-FM). Voice of the B-Sens, Grady Whittenburg will have the call beginning 30 minutes before game time as he hosts Countdown to Faceoff.
