BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators dropped their second straight game, falling to the East Division leading Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins by a score of 3-2 Saturday night. Brandon DeFazio’s goal with 3:07 remaining in regulation broke the tie, sending the Pens home with their first win in five games.
The teams traded goals in the first period. Bryan Lerg put the visiting Penguins on the board at 4:37 of the first period. Philip Samuelsson earned the primary assist on the goal, his first of two in the game. The B-Sens answered as David Dziurzynski buried his first goal of the season at 7:18 to tie the game at one, but Colin McDonald reclaimed the lead for Wilkes-Barre, capitalizing on a power play opportunity at 13:39.
The team’s battled through the second period putting up eleven shots each, but Robin Lehner and the Pens’ Scott Munroe remained perfect. The B-Sens were awarded a penalty shot after a Wilkes-Barre player gloved the puck in the crease, but Munroe preserved the 2-1 lead, stopping Nikita Filatov’s attempt.
Josh Godfrey’s long wrister would eventually tie the game up, 2-2 at 3:41 of the final period.
Although Binghamton outshot Wilkes-Barre 13 to 4 in the final period, the Penguins took advantage of a neutral zone turnover, leading to DeFazio’s game winner.
Lehner earned the nod in goal for the B-Sens, stopping 24 of 27 shots as he fell to 4-8-1 on the season. The loss is Lehner’s seventh straight. Munroe started for the Penguins, turning away 28 of 30 to improve to 2-1-1.
