The Binghamton Senators dropped their fourth straight road contest with a 6-5 loss at the hands of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday night at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
Denis Hamel staked Binghamton to a 1-0 lead just one minute into the divisional battle as the veteran winger buried his team-leading 22nd goal past netminder Peter Mannino. Defenseman Brian Lee assisted on the marker, as did winger Greg Mauldin.
The Sound Tigers responded with goals from Tyler Haskins and Jeremy Colliton over the next seven minutes. The B-Sens evened the score at 2-2 late in the opening period with a goal off the stick of Marc Cavosie. Defensemen Drew Fata and Neil Petruic assisted on the tying goal.
Chris Lee buried an even-strength marker just over one minute into the middle period to give Bridgeport a 3-2 advantage. Binghamton struck back quickly with a power-play tally from Greg Mauldin. After taking the face off for Binghamton, Mauldin dove for the loose puck and flipped a shot from his knees past Mannino to make it a 3-3 game. The B-Sens grabbed the lead when defenseman Neil Petruic took a feed from Ilya Zubov and beat Mannino, giving the d-man his first tally in 117 games.
Trevor Smith answered for Bridgeport with just over three minutes remaining in the middle period to make it 4 apiece. Jon Sim, recently assigned down from the New York Islanders, netted his first tally of the season for Bridgeport’s fifth goal. Junior Lessard buried the eventual game-winning goal with netminder Jeff Glass pulled for the extra skater at 19:00 of the final period.
The B-Sens wouldn’t go quietly, taking advantage of a late Bridgeport penalty with a one-timer off the stick of Mattias Karlsson that found its way through traffic and past Maninno to make it a 6-5 final. Greg Mauldin finished the night with three points (1+2), while Brian Lee (0+2) and Neil Petruic (1+1) each finished with two points from the blue line. Glass made 23 saves in the losing effort.
