B-SENS FLAIL IN THIRD PERIOD, PHANTOMS WIN 3-2

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. –The B-Sens met the Adirondack Phantoms for the third of ten meetings between the East Division rivals this season. Entering the game, the B-Sens had outscored the Phantoms 12-0 in the 2009-10 season. Tonight it was Adirondack who had the numbers advantage, putting a dent in that lopsided scoring tally as they went on to escape Binghamton with a 3-2 victory.

At 9:36 of the first period, Erik Condra carried the puck into the slot, firing a cross-ice pass to an open Drew Bannister who blasted a shot past Johan Backlund into the Adirondack net to give the B-Sens a 1-0 lead short-handed. Derek Smith also registered an assist on the goal.

At 13:51 of the period, Tomas Kudelka fired a shot on the Phantoms net through traffic. Condra, parked in front of Backlund, tipped the puck into the net to put the B-Sens up 2-0 heading into the first intermission. Josh Hennessy, fresh from a four game stint in Ottawa, recorded his first point since his Dec. 22 re-assignment to Binghamton.

Following a scoreless second period, momentum shifted in Adirondack’s direction for the third period of play; as the Phantoms went on to score three unanswered goals for the victory.

At 3:32 of the third, the Phantoms narrowed the scoring gap 2-1 as Ryan Dingle snuck a shot past Mike Brodeur and into the Binghamton net.

Nearly midway through the period, Patrick Maroon registered his third goal of the season to tie the game at two goals apiece.

Matt Clackson netted his second goal of the season unassisted at 12:10 of the period for what would be the game winner. Clackson capitalized on a Binghamton turnover, carrying the puck into the B-Sens’ zone before firing a shot from between the faceoff circles which beat Brodeur for the game winner.   Brodeur ended the night with 19 saves on 22 shots, while Backlund backstopped the Phantoms with 32 saves.

The B-Sens return to action tomorrow night in Rochester as they take on the Amerks in a 5:05 p.m. tilt. Fans can listen live on 680 WINR-AM or 1430 WENE-AM beginning 30 minutes before game time for Countdown to Faceoff with Grady Whittenburg, the voice of the B-Sens.
