ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators travelled to the Blue Cross Arena to take on the Amerks for the seventh of ten meetings between the two teams. The B-Sens entered the game riding a six game losing streak and road weary; having amassed only seven road wins so far in the 2009-10 season.
The Amerks jumped to a 1-0 lead as Jordan Henry lasered his ninth of the season past B-Sens’ net minder Chris Holt at 8:51 of the first. Jamie Johnson and veteran Mike York earned the assists.
Following a roughing penalty on defenseman Drew Bannister, Binghamton broke into the Amerks’ zone shorthanded. Cody Bass fed a cross ice pass to rookie Erik Condra. As Rochester goaltender Alexander Salak moved to make a save on Condra, the rookie B-Sens forward dropped a pass back to defenseman Derek Smith who was streaking up the middle. Smith then fired his seventh goal of the season into a wide open Amerks net to tie the score at 11:39 of the period.
Into the second period, following a hooking call on Ryan Keller, Zack Smith succeeded in poking the puck out of the Binghamton zone, sending Josh Hennessy racing towards the Amerks’ net on a shorthanded breakaway. Hennessy beat Salak high to give the B-Sens a 2-1 lead at 5:45 of the period.
The Amerks answered back just past the midway point of the period, to tie the score once more as Jeff Taffe notched his 21st of the year. Clay Wilson and Mike York would assist.
Into the third period of play, at 12:08 the Amerks pushed their way to a 3-2 lead as Jamie Johnson found the B-Sens’ net for his 23rd of the season and eventual game winner. Taffe and York assisted. The tally would result in two-point nights for Johnson and Taffe and a three-point night for York.
With 41.1 seconds remaining in regulation and Holt pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Jonathan Cheechoo net his third goal as a Binghamton Senator to tie the game at three and send the B-Sens and Amerks into overtime. Drew Bannister and Derek Smith earned the assists.
Rochester would emerge from the overtime period victorious though, as B-Sens’ defenseman Geoff Kinrade tipped in a shot from Taffe, lifting the Amerks to a 4-3 victory. York earned an assist for a four point night.
The B-Sens hit the road for Albany, N.Y. on Tuesday, March 2 to face the East Division rival River Rats in an 11 a.m. tilt.
