SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators travelled to Syracuse to take on the Crunch, a team who trailed them in the East Division standings by a single point. Tonight, the B-Sens put a little more distance between themselves and the Crunch as they coasted to a 4-0 shutout victory to improve to 8-7-1-1, tying them with Norfolk for fourth place in the division with 18 points.
Bobby Butler padded his American Hockey League lead in goals, netting his thirteenth of the season with just 3:01 remaining on the clock in the first period. Defenseman Derek Smith fed a pass to Butler whose hard shot from the slot found its way past Timo Pielmeier to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission. Corey Locke earned his twenty-fourth point of the season as he also received credit for an assist on Butler’s first period goal.
The B-Sens would outshoot the Crunch 14 to 8 in the second stanza. Locke tipped one of those 14 shots through traffic into the Syracuse net at 13:21 to put Binghamton up 2-0 with his seventh goal of the season. Colin Greening and Derek Smith assisted, for Smith it was his second point of the game.
Midway through the third period Ryan Keller’s seventh goal of the season gave the B-Sens a three goal advantage.
At 13:03 of the third, Eric Gryba and John Kurtz dropped the gloves to tussle, both being sent off for fighting. The extra two minutes for interference that Kurtz would receive as a result of altercation put the B-Sens on a late period power play of which Roman Wick was able to capitalize on to round out the scoring for Binghamton. Locke’s assist on the power play tally was his third point of the game, and his eleventh assist with the man advantage so far this season.
Barry Brust manned in the Binghamton net, turning away all 33 Syracuse shots faced on his way to earning first star honors.
The B-Sens return to home ice Friday night to take on the Hershey Bears at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, $16.75 for end seating.
