BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Binghamton Senators goaltender Mike Brodeur earned the nod in goal tonight as his former team, the Rochester Americans made the trip to the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. The start was Brodeur’s first on home ice since the B-Sens’ Oct. 8 home opener. Much to the delight of the crowd of 4,427 on hand to witness his return, Brodeur turned away 35 of 36 shots faced, helping the B-Sens defeat the Amerks 2-1 for their second straight win on home ice.
Also helping the B-Sens to victory was the line of David Dziurzynski, Jim O’Brien and Erik Condra who would be the only players to combine on both Senators’ goals.
The B-Sens were quick to strike. Just 26 seconds into the game, Dziurzynski one-timed a shot from the right circle, which went top shelf over Amerks’ net minder Jacob Markstrom to give his team the early lead. The goal was “Dizzy’s” first as a professional, assisted by Condra and O’Brien respectively.
At the 11:44 mark of the first, B-Sens’ defenseman Eric Gryba would be sent off on a boarding call. On the ensuing power play, Clay Wilson set up Chris Taylor, who tied the score at one on what was only Rochester’s fourth shot on goal in the game.
Just over three minutes into the second period of play, O’Brien blasted a shot to the Amerks’ net in which Markstrom made the initial save. The rebound, however bounced right to Condra who hammered home his 14th goal of the season to put the B-Sens ahead 2-1, which is where they would stay.
The B-Sens travel to Providence tomorrow to take on the Atlantic Division’s Bruins in a 4:05 p.m. match. Fans can listen live on 680 WINR-AM or 1430 WENE-AM beginning 30 minutes before game time for Countdown to Faceoff with Grady Whittenburg, the voice of the B-Sens.
