B-SENS CRUISE PAST ADMIRALS 3-2

NORFOLK, V.A. – Following a 4-3 overtime loss last night against the Admirals, the Binghamton Senators returned to the Scope Arena tonight for a rematch against the East Division rivals. Derek Smith netted a pair of goals, while Roman Wick tallied the game winner with just 12.5 seconds remaining in regulation to help lift the B-Sens to a narrow 3-2 victory.

Barry Brust earned the nod in goal, making his first start for Binghamton since Jan. 19. Brust would turn away 32 of 34 shots faced en route to the win and improved his record to 17-12-1 on the season.

The B-Sens struck first with just 1:07 remaining on the clock in the opening period. With the Admirals’ Mike Vernace and Radko Gudas off serving penalties for holding and boarding respectively, Smith capitalized on the ensuing 5-on-3 advantage. The Binghamton defenseman one-timed a shot from the top of the right circle, beating Dustin Tokarski low glove-side to put the B-Sens on the board, 1-0. Andre Benoit and Corey Locke each received credit for the assists on the goal.

The Admirals countered at 12:35 of the second. Brust denied Blair Jones on a wrap around attempt, but the Norfolk forward succeeded in handling his own rebound, beating the B-Sens net minder to tie the game at one. With the goal, Jones extended his point streak to five straight games, the longest active streak of any player on both rosters. Johan Harju was credited with the lone assist on the goal.

The teams would then trade goals in the opening two minutes of the third period. 61 seconds in, Locke’s shot from the point bounced off Tokarski’s right pad and onto the tape of Smith, who flipped the puck into the Norfolk net for his second goal of the game to give the B-Sens a 2-1 lead. Locke’s assist was his second of the game, and fourth in two nights against the Admirals. A mere 54 seconds after Smith’s strike, Pierre-Cedric Labrie’s fifth of the year beat Brust to tie the game once again.

Just as it appeared the teams would head to overtime for the second straight game, Wick picked up the puck in the neutral zone having just come off the Binghamton bench on a line change and then blasted a shot from mid-slot past Tokarski to win the game for the B-Sens. Wick’s ninth of the season came at 19:47 of the third, sending the 5,352 Admirals faithful in attendance home disappointed.

Up next the B-Sens will travel to Rochester on Friday, Feb. 11 to take on the North Division’s Amerks. Game time is set for 7:35 p.m. Fans can listen live on 680 WINR-AM or 1430 WENE-AM beginning 30 minutes before game time as Grady Whittenburg, the voice of the B-Sens, hosts the Countdown to Faceoff.
