BINGHAMTON, N.Y.
- Derek Whitmore scored with exactly eight minutes left in regulation to break a 2-2 tie and send Portland on its way to a 3-2 road win over Binghamton at the Broome County Arena on Friday night.

The Pirates improved to 7-1-0-0 in their last eight games and closed to within one point of first-place Manchester in the Atlantic Division. Portland still holds five games in hand on the Monarchs over the course of the season’s final few weeks.

Mark Parrish and rookie Mark Voakes also scored for the Pirates, and Voakes has now begun his AHL career with four goals and six points in his first six contests.

Portland goaltender David Leggio (20-5-0) made 19 saves between the pipes and joined teammate Jhonas Enroth (20-17-2) in reaching the 20-win plateau this year. The Pirates also earned a split of their season series with Binghamton, having dropped a 5-2 decision at home on Jan. 11.

Jim O’Brien notched his 19th and 20th goals of the campaign for the skidding Senators, who are now just 2-7-0-1 in their last 10 games but still hold a one-point lead on Worcester for the Eastern Conference’s crossover playoff spot.
