B-Sens Shine at 2013 Rookie Tournament

The puck dropped yesterday for the Ottawa Senators rookies playing in the four-team tournament, and soon after the gloves followed.  The Sens’ rookies were able to settle their emotions in an action packed game to pull out a 4-1 victory over the rookies representing the Pittsburgh Penguins.

For Binghamton Senators fans there were plenty of familiar faces displaying their skills for the parent club in Ottawa.  Jean-Gabriel Pageau, who spent the majority of the season with the B-Sens before getting the call up to Ottawa, played well on his line with Shane Prince and Derek Grant who also were fulltime B-Sens last year.  Troy Rutkowski got the Senators started with an early first period goal, and shortly after Pageau continued right where he left off during the 2013 NHL playoffs and buried one of his own to make it 2-0.

Despite the last second power-play goal surrendered by Francois Brassard in the first period, the Senators goalies played solid all game long.  Brassard played well stopping 21 of 22 shots faced before relinquishing his duties at the mid-way point to Chris Driedger, who kept the Penguins scoreless the rest of the way.  Grant, who was chosen as team captain for the tournament, added two insurance goals of his own to end the day.

Animosity was carried over from last season’s Calder Cup playoffs, when Binghamton lost to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the first round.  Prince, who had an assist on Rutkowski’s first period goal, got into the scrap of the day with Pittsburgh’s renowned hot-head Bobby Farnham.

"It's good to see young offensive players kind of take things upon themselves," Richardson said. "Then people don't take liberties. They say 'I'm not going to hack them all game, because I'm going to have some pushback.”

Since the first tournament in 1999, past rookie team rosters have included the following notable participants who have also played for the Senators: Jared Cowen (2010, 2011), Nick Foligno (2007), Eric Gryba (2011), Erik Karlsson (2009), Robin Lehner (2009, 2010, 2011), Brian Lee (2007), Chris Neil (1999), Peter Regin (2008, 2009), Jason Spezza (2001, 2002), Zack Smith (2008, 2009), Patrick Wiercioch (2010, 2011) and Mika Zibanejad (2011).

The Senators’ rookies will be back in action tomorrow against Chicago at 2:00 p.m. before closing out the tournament Sunday, September 8 against Toronto in a 7:00 p.m. contest.
