B-SENS SURVIVE HERSHEY 4-2

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators dropped the visiting Hershey Bears 4-2 in a back-and-forth battle among division rivals.  Shane Prince scored the go-ahead goal with under 10 minutes to play in the second period, breaking a 2-2 tie and the B-Sens held on during the final 20 minutes of play to maintain sole possession of first place in the East Division.

Derek Grant started off the scoring at 11:47 of the opening period on a shorthanded goal shot over the top of Bear’s goaltender David Leggio.  With Mike Sdao sitting in the penalty box for holding, the Senators penalty-killing unit broke the scoreless game when David Dziurzynski pushed a puck quickly up ice where Grant beat the trailing defense and roofed the puck over the blocker side of Leggio for his second short-handed goal of the year.  Nathan Lawson turned aside all 12 of Hershey’s shots in the opening 20 minutes of play to keep it 1-0 Binghamton heading into the second period.

Hershey leveled the scoreboard just 44 seconds into the middle frame when Brandon Segal added to his team lead in points with his eighth goal of the season.  Matt Puempel pushed his point scoring streak to four straight games with his twelfth marker of the year at 7:43 of the second.  Andre Petersson collected the puck in the neutral zone and carried over the Bear’s blue line before he found a streaking Puempel who buried the puck to regain the lead for Binghamton 2-1.  Hershey once again knotted the score up when Segal pushed home a loose puck in the middle of a scrum on Lawson’s crease.  However, Binghamton took the lead 3-2 heading into the final intermission when Prince redirected the puck past Leggio for his seventh goal of the season.  Chris Wideman received a pass from Buddy Robinson and sent a hard slap shot to the front of the goal where Prince managed to get his stick on it and maneuver it into the back of the net.

Binghamton controlled the puck for the majority of the final period while Lawson turned aside what few chances Hershey could muster.  Cole Schneider sent home an empty-net goal with less than one minute to play, pushing the final score to 4-2.  Lawson finished with 29 saves on 31 shots faced to improve to 14-5-0 for the year.  Leggio turned aside 32 shots in the losing effort.

The B-Sens are back on home ice tomorrow night when they host the Adirondack Phantoms at 7:05p.m.  Tickets are available by calling the Binghamton Senators Executive Office at (607) 722-7367 or stopping in between 8:00a.m. through the end of the second intermission.  Fans can also purchase tickets through the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets during normal business hours by visiting www.ticketmaster.com or at 1-800-745-3000.
