Sens Net Five Unanswered to Drop Devils 5-2

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Senators defeated the Albany Devils 5-2 after overcoming an early deficit in the opening period tonight.  Goaltender Andrew Hammond made his fourth consecutive start for the B-Sens and turned aside 27 of 29 shots faced to earn his 12th victory of the season.  Derek Grant led Binghamton offensively with two goals scored while Corey Cowick and Matt Puempel each chipped in a goal and an assist to give the Sens their third straight win.

Stefan Matteau gave the Devils the early lead 1:09 into the opening period when he knocked home a rebound off of Hammond for his seventh tally of the year.  Binghamton’s power-play unit tied the score at one with less than five minutes remaining in the period.  Puempel redirected a shot from Chris Wideman which beat Devils goaltender Keith Kinkaid high for his 15th goal this season.  The period ended deadlocked at one with Hammond stopping seven of eight shots faced while Kinkaid tuned aside 10 of 11.

Binghamton gave the Devils an early power-play chance less than one minute into the first period; however, the penalty-killing unit gave the hosts their first lead of the night.  Corey Cowick sent an outlet pass from deep in the Sens defensive zone to Grant who then beat Kinkaid low for his third short-handed tally on the year.  With the goal Binghamton extended their league-lead in short-handed markers to 14.  The B-Sens continued the offensive pressure through the period with Cowick doubling the lead at 14:57.  David Dziurzynski tried a wrap-around attempt on Kinkaid who stuffed the try but could not corral the lose puck.  Cowick stepped in and flipped the puck into the half open goal mouth for his eighth goal of the year.  Less than two minutes later, Shane Prince pushed the score to 4-1 when he received a great cross-ice feed from Andre Petersson to send Binghamton into the final intermission up by three.

Grant added his second goal of the night just 1:26 into the final period for his sixth of the season.  Albany showed life late in the period, but Hammond made some tough saves before letting Scott Timmins’ tip in trickle by with less than three minutes to play moving the final score to 5-2.

Kinkaid stopped 35 of 40 shots faced in the losing effort to drop to 16-8-1 for the year.  Wideman chipped in two helpers for the Sens to extend his scoring streak to four straight while fellow defensemen Fredrik Claesson pushed his scoring streak to six straight with his secondary assist.

Binghamton returns to action tomorrow night when they host the Rochester Americans in a 7:05p.m. matchup.  The B-Sens have defeated the Amerks in all four meetings so far this season.  Tickets for tomorrow are available by calling the Binghamton Senators Executive Office at (607) 722-7367 or stopping in between 8:00a.m. and puck drop.  Fans can also purchase tickets through the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets during normal business hours by visiting www.ticketmaster.com or at 1-800-745-3000.
