SENS PUMMEL PIRATES 7-1

Portland, Maine – Binghamton survived an extremely chippy contest to finish up its four-game road trip with a 7-1 win over the Portland Pirates.  The two squads combined for 224 penalty minutes with a total of 46 infractions being handed out.  Jim O’Brien led Binghamton with two goals and two assists while Shane Prince chipped in four helpers to tie a B-Sens franchise record.

The B-Sens grabbed the lead 2:27 into the opening period when Chris Wideman beat Louis Domingue low off a rebound.  Prince and O’Brien picked up the assists on Wideman’s sixth goal of the season.  Exactly four minutes later Prince fed Danny Hobbs in the high slot where he wristed home the puck.  For Hobbs it was his first American Hockey League goal in his first ever game.  Brandon Yip cut the Sens lead to 2-1 on the power play when he was able to slap home a puck after a flurry of shots down low on Hammond.  At 14:42 Binghamton would grab its two-goal cushion back on O’Brien’s eighth goal of the year.  Prince carried the puck behind the net and found O’Brien in the deep slot who sent a slap shot over Domingue making it 3-1. Hammond stopped 11 of 12 shots in the opening 20 minutes while Domingue surrendered three goals on nine shots.

Binghamton added two goals during the middle frame to increase their lead to 5-1.  Corey Cowick pushed home a wraparound try on Domingue for his ninth tally of the season at the 8:55 mark.  Following Cowick’s goal a scrum broke out on the Pirates crease.  After a long delay while the linesmen and referees worked out the calls Darren Kramer received a game misconduct while Brett Hextall and Kyle Hagel received matching calls for the Pirates.  Domingue’s night would also end after surrendering his fourth goal of the game, yielding his duties to Mark Visentin.  Binghamton capitalized on the power play chance following Hagel and Hextall’s outbreak when O’Brien ripped home a feed from Mike Hoffman at 10:50 for his second goal of the game.

The third period was slowed by a number of penalties however, Binghamton still managed to add to its lead.  David Dziurzynski received a centering pass from Matt Puempel and lifted the puck over a spawling Visentin for his fifth goal of the year.  Following a slew of fighting calls and game misconduct penalties the Sens converted on the power play for the second time.  Working a five-on-three man advantage O’Brien fed the puck across the goal mouth to Hoffman who lifted the puck in for his 23rd goal of the year moving the final score to 7-1.

Binghamton went two for 10 on the man advantage in a night where Portland was tagged with 26 infractions for a total of 134 minutes.  The B-Sens amassed 90 penalty minutes but managed to kill off six of the Pirates seven power-play chances.  Hoffman and Hobbs both finished with a goal and an assist on the evening as eleven different skaters contributed points for Binghamton.

The B-Sens will be back on home ice this coming Wednesday, February 5 when they host the Pirates in a 7:05p.m. matchup.  Tickets for the game are available by calling the Binghamton Senators Executive Office at (607) 722-7367 or stopping in between 9:00a.m. and 5:30p.m.  Fans can also purchase tickets through the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets during normal business hours by visiting www.ticketmaster.com or at 1-800-745-3000.
