The Binghamton Senators killed all nine Hershey Bear power plays while goaltender Jeff Glass stopped 30 of 31 shots to help beat their East Division foes 5-1 Friday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena and earn new head coach Curtis Hunt his first home victory of the season.
Following a scoreless but tight first period, the Binghamton Senators skated out after the intermission and dominated the second period. Defenseman Drew Fata put Binghamton on the board at 2:53 with his second power-play goal of season, wristing a shot from top post that lasered its way under the left arm of Bears goaltender Daren Machesney. Center Peter Regin assisted on the play, finding Fata wide open while shaking off two Hershey defenders.
Moments later, the tide almost shifted when Hershey center--and American Hockey League top goal scorer--Alexandre Giroux was awarded a penalty after being taken down in front of the net. Glass denied Giroux the scoring opportunity, however, sprawling across the crease to block the center’s shot, which was headed toward the lower left corner of the net.
Eight-and-a-half minutes later, the Bears fought their way back when right wing Graham Mink tapped in a rebound that trickled over Glass’s right leg pad and landed inches from the goal line.
Binghamton, though, responded during the last three minutes of play in the middle period, netting two goals 51 seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead into the dressing room. Center Marc Cavosie scored first, deflecting a right-circle shot by forward Chaz Johnson over Machesney’s left shoulder. Left wing Greg Mauldin would score his 11th goal of the season on the next line shift, with help from defenseman Mattias Karlsson and left wing Denis Hamel. Karlsson created a turnover in Hershey’s zone and passed the puck to Hamel, who skated up the left-side boards and passed the puck to Mauldin, who wristed a shot point blank. The assist extended Karlsson’s assist streak to five games (0+7).
With the momentum in hand, Binghamton didn’t waste any time or energy sealing their victory over the Bears.  At 3:53 of the third period, center Josh Hennessy scored his first short-handed goal of season unassisted when Hershey turned over the puck in their offensive zone near the blue line. Hennessy skated up the middle unscathed and dumped the puck behind Machesney’s left leg.
Hennessy was at it again, netting Binghamton’s fifth and final goal on a power play. Left wing Ilya Zubov took aim from the left circle, but the puck veered right, ricocheting off Hennessy’s leg and into the net. The marker gave Hennessy his second multipoint game in five days.
Nine B-Sens players found the scoresheet against the Bears, including two assists each from Karlsson and Zack Smith.
The B-Sens (28-17-5-3, 64 pts.) look to make it two straight when they host the Philadelphia Phantoms (28-23-1-1, 58 pts.) on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Good seats remain for this contest. Tickets can be purchased at, by calling ticket master at 722-7272, or at the Arena box office inside the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
