MUNROE LEADS PHANTOMS PAST B-SENS

While outshooting East Division foe Philadelphia 37-24, the Phantom’s goaltender Scott Munroe shut down the Binghamton Senators 3-1 Wednesday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena in the teams’ final meeting of the 2008-09 hockey season.

The Phantoms’ scoring began late in the first period at 14:41 when former Senator Rob Sirianni cleared the puck from the left circle, slipping it to Philadelphia center Jared Ross, who was covered by two Binghamton defenders. Ross flicked the puck forward and over netminder Jeff Glass’s right shoulder.

Philadelphia’s dominance continued in the second stanza, scoring twice in opening 5:17. Fifty-six seconds after the puck dropped, rookie Jonathon Kalinski notched his seventh marker of the season, knocking the puck in the net following a wraparound pass from right wing Andreas Nodl. Four-and-a-half minutes later, left wing Patrick Maroon fought off three B-Sens from inside the crease to slap the puck over Glass’ left blocker.

While down 3-0, the B-Sens were not out of it and denied Monroe a shutout as they scored the game’s only power play goal. With Philadelphia’s Kalinski in the penalty box for holding, the Senators kept solid puck possession, allowing team captain Denis Hamel and left wing Ilya Zubov to work the offensive zone low and open up defenseman Mattias Karlsson near the blue line. Zubov skated along the boards and passed the puck to Karlsson, who then lasered a shot high and through traffic past Munroe.

The goal marked the Swede’s eighth goal of season, extending his point streak to four games (2+2), as well as Zubov’s point streak to three games (1+2). Hamel’s secondary assist was his 500th AHL point (267+233).

The loss tightens the B-Sens’ lead over the Phantoms to six points for the fourth and final playoff position in the East Division. The B-Sens return to home ice for a weekend pair, starting on Friday night when they host the Hershey Bears (45-19-1-6, 97 pts.) at 7:05 p.m. Good seats remain for this contest. Tickets can be purchased at www.ticketmaster.com, by calling ticket master at 722-7272, or at the Arena box office inside the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
