DENIS HAMEL RECORDS 500th CAREER AHL POINT

Left-winger Denis Hamel became the 75th AHL player to collect 500 points with an assist in Binghamton’s 3-1 loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Binghamton’s captain now shows 267goals and 233assists in 629 career AHL games.

Hamel is the third player this season to hit the milestone, joining forwards Keith Aucoin (Hershey Bears) and Darren Haydar (Grand Rapids Griffins) as the newest members of the 500-point club.

A native of Lachute, Que., Hamel began his AHL career with the Rochester Americans in 1997 and went on to score 10 goals and add 15 assists in 74 games during his rookie campaign. He skated in 272 games with Rochester over four seasons, registering 87 goals and 76 assists while with the team.

Following three NHL seasons with Buffalo, Hamel signed with the Ottawa Senators organization in 2003 and went on to lead the B-Sens in goals (29), assists (38) and points (67) in his first season with the club.

Hamel has led the B-Sens in goal scoring in each of his four full seasons, including a career-high 56 goals during the 2005-06 season. His 91 points that season were also a career-high, and he shared the Willie Marshall Award with Donald MacLean (Grand Rapids) as the league’s top goal scorer.

The 31-year-old spent the entire 2006-07 season in the NHL with Atlanta, Ottawa and Philadelphia. He returned to the AHL with Binghamton for the 2007-08 season and collected his fourth 30-goal season with 32 markers. Hamel also served as captain of the Canadian AHL All-Stars at the 2008 AHL All-Star Classic in Binghamton.

Already the B-Sens all-time leader in goals (180), assists (157), points (337), power-play goals (74), short-handed goals (14) and game-wining goals (32), Hamel is on pace to lead the club in goal scoring for the fifth time as his 24 markers currently lead the way.
