B-SENS ERASE THREE-GOAL DEFICIT TO DOWN ALBANY

The Binghamton Senators scored four unanswered goals, including two by rookie winger Zack Smith, on their way to a 4-3 overtime victory against the Albany River Rats on Wednesday night at the Times Union Center.

The River Rats jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, with the first marker coming on the power play. Albany capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play when defenseman Mark Flood fired the puck past netminder Brian Elliott at the 12:24 mark. Nicolas Blanchard extend the lead three minutes later with an even-strength tally. The River Rats out shot the B-Sens 11-6 in the opening stanza.

Mike Angelidis made it a 3-0 game early in the middle period with his first tally of the season. The B-Sens turned the momentum midway through the second.

Right wing Ryan Shannon got the comeback started for Binghamton, scoring his second marker of the season at 11:23. Ilya Zubov and Tomas Kudelka assisted. The B-Sens continued to pressure Albany netminder Daniel Manzato, firing 17 shots his way in the second period.

The B-Sens converted a power-play opportunity early in the third period when defenseman Derek Smith buried his first marker of the year, taking a feed from fellow blueliner Matt Carkner. Peter Regin also assisted on the goal.

Binghamton’s other Smith, Zack, took over where Derek left off. Binghamton’s leading scorer buried the game-tying goal at 16:27 off a feed from defenseman Brendan Bell. Ilya Zubov added his second assist of the night. The B-Sens dominated play in the period, firing 15 shots at Manzato.

Just 33 seconds into the overtime period, Zack Smith completed the B-Sens comeback with an unassisted game-winner, his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Brian Elliott made 23 saves to earn his third win in net for Binghamton.

The B-Sens penalty kill unit was solid once again, holding the River Rats to one power-play goal in eight attempts.

Binghamton next heads to Syracuse on Friday night for a rematch of last Friday’s shootout loss to the Crunch.
